Server problems

I use news.eternal-september.org to access this NG, which requires signing
in with a username and password. In the past few weeks it often rejected
attempts to sign in by my news client, Outlook Express. Anyone aware why it
might have happened, and what alternate FREE server I might use?

I dumped MSOE and Opera for Thunderbird.
Never encountered that problem since.
You might want to give it a try.

Using Forté Agent 6, I never encountered such a problem. (Unsolicited
opinion: Outlook Express doesn't qualify as a news client.)

Thanks for the reply.
OE is bundled with the OS, hence free. Agent is not free. Thunderbird as
a news client is much worse than OE - it needs to download the same old
posts over and over.

Forget the OE bashing, I use Outlook Express to access Eternal
September without any problems. My (uninformed) guess would be that
you try to access to often. One of my mailing accounts allows scanning
for new mails only once per half hour. Perhaps Eternal September has a
similar block, to prevent DOS attacks, or people who cause inordinate
ammounts of traffic by scanning every minute :-)

I think you hit it on the head! I recently decreased the time between
automatic downloads of mail and news, and it seems to have coincided with
the problem cropping up again.
BTW, I do not think scanning every minute is too frequent. When someone
is stuck with a problem badly enough to ask help in a NG every minute of
delay receiving it makes it more frustrating.

Whats wrong with the free ones like news.aioe.org ?, your afraid what

Thanks!
antakira is read-only.
edisontel has older posts than eternal-september, but is read-only.
openwatcom only serves its own 4 NGs (which I already get).
I did not try others. I will continue at eternal-septemeber, but will
probably check for new posts manually only. This may delay my responses.
Thanks again!
